An old king had three sons. They always used to quarrel with one another. One day the old king fell very ill. He called all his sons.
The old king sent for a bundle of sticks and asked each of his sons to break the bundle. One by one, the three sons tried to break the bundle, but all of them failed. The old king then ordered them to untie the bundle and break the sticks one by one.
Now even the youngest son could break all the sticks easily. Then the old king said, “My sons! United you stand, divided you fall because unity is strength.” All the sons learnt the lesson and promised to remain united in future.

There were two merchants. They did their business together. Once they had to pass a lonely forest. The forest was full of dangerous animals. The two merchants agreed to travel together and to stand by each other in case of danger from wild animals.
As they walked on, they saw a huge bear coming towards them. Both of them started shivering with fear. One merchant immediately climbed up the nearest tree without bothering about his friend. The other had no time to escape; so he lay down on the ground, and kept perfectly still. The bear came up to him and smelt him all over. The bear gave a loud grunt, and walked away.
When the bear had gone away, the merchant got up. In the mean time, the second merchant also came down from the tree. “That was a very clever trick you played, my friend”, he said. “The bear seemed to be whispering something in your ear. What did it say?”
“It gave me some good advice. He warned me never to trust a man who runs away in time of danger,” said the other.

A poor girl in a small town had advertised a dance programme. On the posters, she claimed herself to be a pupil of a great dancer, Shankaran. She gave this wrong information to attract more spectators.
One day Shankaran himself arrived in the town. The poor girl knew that soon the people would find out the truth. She was very upset. She went to Shankaran and fell to her knees before him. She told him that she was an orphan and had no means of livelihood. So she pretended to be his pupil.
Shankaran looked at her. “You’ve done wrong,” he said, “but you are sorry for your mistake. Let me see your dance.” The girl danced very well, but Shankaran corrected her in one or two points. Then he said, “I’ve instructed you a little. Now you are a pupil of Shankaran. You are a good dancer and Tam happy to have a student like you.”

An old farmer had three sons. They were very lazy and never wanted to work. Once the farmer became very ill. He wanted his sons to learn to work before his death. So, he called them to his bedside. Then he told them he was dying, and he would leave a treasure to them all. He said the treasure was hidden in the orchard. His sons asked him where it was buried. He said he did not know exactly. “Dig all over the orchard”, he said; “you will find it somewhere there.” Then he died.
His sons started digging the orchard to find the treasure. They kept on digging but they could not find anything. They were angry, and thought their father had lied to them. But next year the trees were laden with fruits. The thorough digging had produced a big crop. They sold the fruits and made a lot of money. Their hard work of digging made them rich. This was the treasure they found by digging. The lazy sons realised that their father wanted to convey the importance of hard work to them.

The bee thanked the dove for the timely help.

One day a farmer went to the market to buy some sweets. He went to a shop and bought some sweets. The shopkeeper did not give him full weight. The farmer saw this. “You are not giving me full weight,” said he. “Never mind,” replied the shopkeeper, “You will have the less to carry.”
The farmer did not say anything. He took the sweets and paid him five rupees less. “What”, said the shopkeeper, “You have paid me five rupees less.” “It does not matter,” said the farmer, “You will have the less to count.” The shopkeeper could not say anything. He kept silent over his folly.

The man wanted to get all the eggs from the goose at once.
The man planned to kill the goose and take out all the eggs. He brought a big knife and cut the goose into two. But to his surprise, there was no egg in her body. The greedy man was shocked. He realised his mistake. But it was too late for him. He had lost the goose forever.

One day a merchant wanted to go to a fair to sell his jewels. He decided to go there on his horse as the fair was about twenty kilometres from his house. When he was about to start, his servant told him that his horse’s shoe needed a nail. The merchant was in a hurry. He did not bother much about it and rode off immediately. When he was passing a lonely forest, the horse began to limp.
He realised that the horse’s shoe had come off. There was no blacksmith nearby. So the merchant got down and began to walk beside his horse. All of a sudden some robbers surrounded him. They took all the jewels from the merchant and ran away. The merchant lost everything. He cursed himself for not listening to his servant.

There is an incident which took place at an examination during Gandhiji’s first year at the high school. Mr Giles, the School Inspector, had come on a visit. He gave five words as a spelling exercise. One of these words was ‘kettle. Gandhiji had misspelt it. The teacher tried to help Gandhiji but he did not accept the help. He would not copy the spelling from his neighbour’s slate. The result was that all the boys except Gandhiji were found to have spelt each word correctly. Only he had been stupid. He never could learn the art of copying.

The blind beggar always needed a man to lead him on the road. Similarly, the lame beggar always wanted somebody to carry him to different places.
One day they were sitting together. They were talking about their miserable condition. So they decided to help each other.
The blind beggar now carried the lame beggar on his back and the lame man showed him the way. In this way they began to beg from door to door. In the evening, they divided whatever money they got. Thus they succeeded in earning their living quite easily.

At last the mice held a meeting. They said, “We must do something to this dreadful cat. If we don’t, we shall all be killed. Each mouse had some idea. One said one thing; another said another. At last one young mouse said, “I know what we can do! Let us tie a bell round the cat’s neck. Then we shall know when she is coming, and we can run away in time.” All the mice thought this was a good plan.
But one old mouse said, “Yes, this seems to be a very good idea. But there is one difficulty. Who will tie the bell round the neck of the cat?” All the mice were silent. Nobody was willing to take up that challenge. They kept looking at each other. Just then they heard the cat coming. They all at once ran away into their holes.
